Public transport in Saudi Arabia set a new record during the second quarter of 2025, with the number of passengers using buses within the Kingdom's cities exceeding 21.4 million, the General Transport Authority announced today. This reflects a significant increase in reliance on public transport and an increase in daily use among residents of various cities.
Riyadh in the lead
Riyadh topped the list of cities with the highest number of passengers, with more than 15.6 million passengers using public buses, indicating a significant expansion of the capital's internal transportation network and tangible results in improving the efficiency of movement within the city. Makkah followed with approximately 3.3 million passengers, while Jeddah recorded approximately 995 passengers during the same period.
Growing reliance on buses
In the Eastern Province, Dammam and Qatif combined recorded approximately 753 passengers, a figure that demonstrates the growing interest in using buses as a primary means of transportation. In Medina, the number of passengers reached 223, while the Qassim region recorded approximately 199 passengers, Taif 165 passengers, and Jazan 101 passengers. Tabuk, meanwhile, recorded 9 passengers, indicating the varying levels of reliance on public transportation depending on the nature of each city.
Success of government efforts
These figures confirm the success of government efforts to expand public transportation services in Saudi Arabia, in line with the objectives of the National Transport and Logistics Strategy, which seeks to improve quality of life, reduce reliance on private vehicles, and lower carbon emissions, while supporting environmental sustainability by providing smart and efficient transportation solutions.
